HEALTH WITHIN A CUP
􁸤
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cupping is the method of creating a vacuum on
the skin to improve blood flow to the area. It was used to treat respiratory problems brought on by
the common cold, pneumonia or bronchitis. Other benefits were found as well such as dredging &
and clearing old residue (blood and solidified lymph) out of the muscle and soft tissue caused by
injuries, surgeries, and chronic movement patterns.
Advocates use cupping therapy to treat the following:
Decrease or relieve pain and inflammation
Skin problems (eczema, acne)
Release deep muscle tightness and knots
Fertility and gynecological disorders
Release and soften scar tissue
Open energy flow of the body
Increase range of motion
Rheumatic diseases (arthritic joints)
Open chest and lungs
Improve circulation
Drain lymph fluid, clear drainage pathways
Sedate the nervous system
Blood disorders (anemia, hemophilia)
The Public Library of Science, published a review in 2012 of 135 studies on the efficacy of cupping
therapy. The review concluded that (a.) cupping therapy did not produce serious adverse side
effects; and (b.) TCM patients who received cupping therapy as part of their treatment showed
significant health benefits over those who did not receive cupping. Patients who particularly
benefited from the inclusion of cupping included those afflicted with shingles, facial paralysis (e.g.
Bell’s Palsy), acne, and spondylolysis (or osteoarthritis of the neck).
Our customers often feel a deep relaxing warmth during a cupping session and a tingling sensation
that lasts long after the treatment has ended. Massage Cupping is an effective addition to any spa
or healing session.
New silicone massage cups are now available, an innovation for cupping therapy. “Medical silicone”
cups are more pliable and simpler to use than the traditional glad or plastic cups. They also prevent
the deep bruising associated with traditional cupping. It is highly recommended to drink plenty of
water after cupping to help move the blood and other fluids through the affected area. General
massage can help reduce the blood bruising immediately after the cupping.
CAUTION:
It is not advised to place cups over:
Skin ulcers
Abdominal or sacral regions of pregnant women.
A deep vein thrombosis
An ulcer
An artery
Areas where a strong pulse is felt
